Almost everyone visiting Ho Chi Minh City is offered a Mekong Delta day trip, and a lot of people take it and come away unimpressed. The overnight version is a different experience, and the gap between the two is larger than the extra day suggests.

What the day trip is

A coach leaves Ho Chi Minh City in the morning for My Tho or Ben Tre, the nearest delta towns, roughly two hours away. The standard circuit is a boat across to an island, a horse cart, a coconut candy workshop, a bee farm with honey tea, a sampan paddle down a narrow palm-lined canal, lunch, and the coach back.

It is inexpensive, it is organised, and it delivers you back to the city for dinner. What it is not is the delta as a working place: the stops are built for coaches, the sampan stretch is short, and several of the activities are demonstrations rather than things happening anyway.

Why it disappoints people

Mostly because of what it is sold as. Marketed as "the Mekong Delta", it is a day of staged stops on the nearest fringe of it. Sold honestly as a day out of the city with boats, canals and coconut candy, it is reasonable value and a pleasant enough day.

What the overnight is

Can Tho is about three to four hours from Ho Chi Minh City, deeper into the delta and a proper city in its own right. You arrive in the afternoon, sleep there, and go out on the water before dawn.

The reason to do it is Cai Rang, the floating market, which operates in the early morning and is winding down by the middle of it. Wholesale boats moor with produce hung from a pole above the bow so buyers can see what they are selling; smaller boats work between them. By seven or eight it is thinning out.

The thing the standard day trip does not do

This is the whole argument. Cai Rang happens at dawn, and dawn in Can Tho is roughly four hours' drive from Ho Chi Minh City. The coach circuits sold out of Ho Chi Minh City leave in the morning and go to My Tho or Ben Tre, not Can Tho, so none of them is at Cai Rang while it is running. The "floating market" included in some day itineraries is a different and much smaller operation closer to the city.

So the choice is not between a short delta trip and a long one. It is between a day of staged stops on the near fringe and an early morning on a working wholesale market, several hours deeper into the delta, and those are not the same thing scaled differently.

What the overnight costs you

One extra day against the coach trip, and two days of the trip in total; on a short itinerary those days come out of somewhere else. A week in Vietnam that includes Hanoi, the centre and the south does not have two spare days for the delta without cutting something.

It also costs more, though not dramatically — the extra is a night's accommodation and the longer transport.

Doing the overnight independently

Can Tho is served by frequent buses from Ho Chi Minh City's western bus station and by private car. Accommodation in the city covers every level. Boats to Cai Rang are arranged through hotels or directly at the Ninh Kieu quay the evening before, and leave around five in the morning.

A private boat for two or three people is inexpensive by comparison with a tour seat, and lets you set the time and the route, which matters here because the market's best hour is early.

The middle options

Two-day packaged tours out of Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho exist and solve the transport. They are a reasonable compromise if you would rather not arrange the pieces, though they put you on the water at the operator's hour rather than yours. Ben Tre and Vinh Long homestays are the other middle route: closer than Can Tho, quieter than My Tho, with an overnight in a family home and a morning on smaller canals. They do not get you to Cai Rang, but they do get you off the coach circuit.

So which

If you have two weeks or more, do the overnight to Can Tho. If you have one week and the delta is a curiosity rather than a priority, skip it entirely rather than spend a day on the coach circuit — that day is better used in the city or the centre. If you have one week and you really want to see the delta, the day trip is the honest compromise, taken for what it is.

What makes this hard is that it is not a standalone decision. Two days for Can Tho come out of Hanoi, the centre or the coast, and which of those you can afford to shorten depends on what else is already fixed — the internal flights, the season, the airports at each end. Working out which commitments foreclose which is what Vietnam, End to End is built around.
